Terry Thomas

Ahh.... well Hello there...

14th July 1911 - January 8th 1990

Introduction

This site is intended to be an honourable (well, maybe) dedication to one of the best film actors of this century. He was without doubt a comic talent the likes of which we will be lucky to see again.

Terry Thomas as a gap-toothed comic player who used his expressive eyes, mobile eyebrows and Royal Guards' mustache to create a variety of asinine British characters, usually in supporting roles, occasionally in leads. His comic personae ranged from the comically malevolent to the naïve in such films as I'M ALL RIGHT JACK (1960), IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD (1963) and, perhaps his signature role, Sir Percival War-Armitage in THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES (1965). He was also well known for being a great raconteur and able to elaborate on what might seem even an ordinary event.

His activity was curtailed when he contracted Parkinson's disease in 1971; its debilitating effects worsened year by year, and drained his finances. Toward the end of his life his plight was publicized and both fans and colleagues came to his aid. His autobiography, "Filling the Gap," was published in 1959. I think that this was the first Terry-Thomas site on the web, but there are now a number of other sites that have a mention of him and his work. Thanks to all those sites whose resources I have mercilessly plundered to show you here, when I can I have shown credit for them. If anybody is upset by me using "their" property - let me know and I'll remove it as soon as possible.

A list of other sites that mention Terry-Thomas can be found here.

Sorry if I've missed any out, let me know.... More film summaries will be added as soon as I get around to it. Probably. I have been contacted by various people who would like sound files to download, so would I. At the moment I have been sent one by Chris Moon (Thank you!) which can be found with all sorts of other bits and pieces here
